REVIEW: Sodi Cookey at Burgh House

  • Burgh House New End Square London, England, NW3 1LT United Kingdom (map)

The 18th century music room at Burgh House Museum provided an intimate backdrop for Ayo Vincent on the piano and Michael Searle on bass to accompany a more reflective Sodi Cookey on vocals.

Gone was the take-the-no-prisoners raw energy of his recent show at the Camden Club, replaced with a gentle guide through his repertoire.  This is not to say that the hi-energy firm favourites ‘My Mind’ and 'Spaghetti' were left behind - they were absolutely demanded by the audience, and Cookey obliged with his usual amusing personal histories bookending each song.

The trio showed versatility by having to perform without percussion (the close residential area unpermitting), however, the absence of a driving rhythm did not take away from the energy that Cookey pulled from and pushed back to the audience.  In the end, after nine songs and two encores (there were calls for five!)  Cookey gently led his audience back to romance with another rendition of his latest single ‘Show Me’.
